Student words of wisdom, Spring Semester 2006

I've culled these from my American Government and Political Theory classes (and from a student paper for another class I teach) over the 2006 spring semester. Writing them down saved me from tearing my thinning hair out.

On October 16th, 1969, president Abdirrashid Ali Sharmarke was assassinated by a police honor guard’s pullet in the town of Las Anode.

Popular consent is a democratic value in which the people’s consent is detrimental to government and of which importance draws upon the participation of different communities to come to a consensus.

During evolution, some changes came about.

We have so many great people who fought for equality and rights such as Martin Luther King who fought for racial inequality and violence.

Equality has never been as equal as it is defined.

By being a woman myself, I am thankful that women have the same rights as men do today.

Even though equality was implemented with the ending of slavery after the Civil War to both men and women of all races, political equality were still controlled predominately by white males.

Women have broken down the gender profile of a political officer since the 1920’s and still continue until today.

The adjournment of apartheid in South Africa ended state sanctioned white supremacy and ethnic separation.

Phad – picture story painted on cloth enacted by women.

Not all of Wollstonecraft inhabitants were against her like her close friend Richard Price he asserted that people cannot be moral without independence.

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was once an English author and feminist.

Declaration of Rights gives hope to new ideas.

In terms of Cugoano’s life, for this political thinker lived between the years 1757-1801. As an African abolitionist, he was active in England in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Unlike many of his contemporaies Cugoano was born to the Fante people in what is now Ghana.

Throughout history, we reflect on a time whereas, women’s rights were argued for by a plethora of influential women in our world.

She accompanies herself with the “Cercle Social; an association with the goal of equal political and legal rights for women.”

She emphasized that women should has the same rights as a man.

The author learned that the actual philosophy of Cugoano can be found with in ceratain works, all of which his are forcibly expressed in his magnum opus, Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil of Slavery and, Commerce of the Human Species (1787).

African Americans fall at the button of this category too.

Women don’t want to come under man.

Without trust there is room for failure and a little space for acceptance.

Goldman’s view on challenging morals has helped the breakdown of many discriminatory factions of life, such as birth control, abortion, marriage, sex before marriage, and a woman’s right to pursue a life of choice without condemnation, whatever that choice may be.

In my opinion this is well thought but far fetched assumption that is even stenched with some hypocrisy.

However Weber was not against politics, he was simply in opposition to the types of civilized culture that was disclosed from political foundations.

Hitler despised Marxists. He did not relish the idea of Marxists opposing Communism.

In contrast to his beliefs, Friedrich Nietzsche has some views many can disagree with as well.

The French Revolution was a major turning point for the French people.

It wasn’t until 1944 that French citizenship was granted to males only.

This called into question the belief that men only had the freedom to satisfy their sexual urges outside of marriage.

Religion and morality are used as weapons to keep women in submission, than whips and bondages.

Mary Wollstonecraft lived from April 27, 1759 until September 10, 1797 when she died briefly after giving birth.

In exchange, there has been an acceptance of commercial values to play a large role in determining trivial news topics that are inexpensive.

Each year we might have a change but it is a small different.

Hitler’s idea of an ideal society was an idea that he shared alone.

During the Monica Lewinsky scandal, President Bill Clinton was almost impeached. He was charged with purgery.

Members in the senate wouldn’t vote in a way that would upset other members.

When discussing how the philosophies of Martin Luther King Jr., relates to African Americans in the modern day period the U.S. presidential elections of 1993 can be a great example of why most of Dr. King’s philosophies are still important today.

Based upon the past, observing from an historical aspect the comparison of the two positions can not be compared.

Beauvoir said that the struggle was equal but she only proves this in the fact that they both are the other, as she said in The Second Sex.

Women do have a history and a past, compared to that of the Negro. Negro’s were striped away from their home with no since of history or path that can be traced, but to Africa.

They were beaten and raped by the white dominated male, and they were not included in the struggle for gender equality, because they were busy being the mammy to a white women’s child.

French peasants were tortured or received prison time if they said something to an Algerian.

The second approach is that of the infamous Martin Luther King Jr., the approach that seemed to work best for this prominent black leader is the non-violent approach.

However, being a black woman, to top all of the aforementioned off, we were publicly beaten, raped, whipped, worked to the bone, and talked down upon.

Everyone won’t to live comfortable.

A person’s social status since the discovery of America has always played a role in the judicial system.

The due process can be argued by many poor individuals for being selective and does not really apply to everyone in American jurisdiction as the government tries to emphasize.

As the times change, which they have drastically since the Bill of Rights should be amended with these times.

There is a wrong and a right way to say something that is on your mind. Therefore, putting limits on freedom of expression would not be expressing the nation’s biggest logo, land of the free!

I think a lot of people have lost their respect for people.

In this Communist ideology all humanity shares a common ownership in his state.

Michael Waltzer is a Jewish professor at Princeton University in New Haven, Connecticut.

He concerns himself with cultural issues of identity politics and concern for self rather than the social issues of economics.

Rodney became a poster boy for the dreams and aspirations of the politically aware within young people and from the middle to lower classes. These people were socially, economically and politically unaware of any knowledge within this realm.

In this class we have studied many of these theorists, some of who I was already aware and many that I have never heard of.

Fried Nietzsche was a German philosopher whose critiques of contemporary culture, religion, and philosophy centered around a basic question regarding the foundation of values and morality.

Malcolm X provided the public with his philosophy of black nationalist political philosophy.

The theorists that have been essentially relative to my life are Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Quobna Ottobah Cugoano, and Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King was a fan of civil rights leader as well as a political tool in American society.

She never married but was in was in a relationship with Sartre Merleau-Ponty, who had a slight influence on Beauvoir’s thinking.

Weber believes that there are qualities that a person must have in order to engage in politics, and that there are qualities that you cannot possess in order to be an effective politician.

Mary [Wollstonecraft] was sincerely sensitive to the societies that promoted outward beauty alone.

After being banned from Europe, he moved to London to reside.

This notable philosopher neglected his path to study theology with a strong desire to study philology.

Goldman felt that those who were in power sought to control women, because the use of birth control was prohibited by women.

He spoke for the poor and those who really did not have a voice in the public eye.

In a liberal democracy, people have freedom to speak out even if it is about the government.

The ideas of the theorists that will be altercated in this paper more or less focus on liberal democracy (Cugoano and John Stuart Mill) and cultural identity as a value that is thought of when defining liberal democracy (Emma Goldman and Malcolm X).

Mill feels that their potential does not matter by skin color.

Mill understood that the body cannot with stain, what the mind does not understand.

Liberal democracy is a form of government in which the country is run by elected officials which is usually based on toleration for different types of people.

In his booke he states that people should be able to have the freedom to live their lif in any way they choose as long as they are not creatig hurting to others.

His theory is that each person is developed at different levels, with assistants to these levels everyman is put on earth for a duty.

He also is responsible for inciting a new centre of African learning and discussion.

Bob Marley and Reggae served as a median to the entire world.

Cultural identity then creates a problem, with Cugoano he had a liberal way of thinking but his philosophy surrounded the people of Africa, he sought out to change his own cultural group to better society, and not to all mankind.

Original Rastas (Rastafarianism was a new religion) surfaced with the thoughts of Marcus Gravey.

The government should also, on behalf of the rights to life and safety of its citizens be permitted to regulate unlicensed medical advice, attempted bribery, perjury, criminal conspiracies, threats to assassinate the president, criminal solicitation, child pornography, false advertising, and whatever other ill noble act that might put the life of another at risk.
