Jamaica is not the only Caribbean country where homophobia runs unchecked, as this story from St Martin demonstrates. There's a streak of viciousness in the region that, frankly, is frightening. Mostly, I suspect, it comes from a hypermasculine fear of exposing the fact that even the toughest man has a feminine side -- reinforced by a religion that draws such a sharp line between masculine and feminine that it oppresses even those it seeks to empower.
