the purpose is the matter

that gives us all the power to comprehend
our purposes is nothing but our desire
for what we want is what we name our end

it does us not a whit of good to fake or pretend
that we know what is what for we require
that gives us all the power to comprehend

we do not speak of evils since all that we intend
will not be played on trumpet or on lyre
for what we want is what we name our end

the nimble trees won't at our wishes bend
they'll seem to rise each moment ever higher
that gives us all the power to comprehend

the genius that sets forth the normal trend
that sends the signals forth along the wire
for what we want is what we name our end

do not i beg you chide nor rephrehend
do not condemn the laughter or the fire
that gives us all the power to comprehend
for what we want is what we name our end
