unheroic couplets

our soldiers die after barbaric torture they
gave their lives honourably but we say
that our enemies are the vilest foulest savages
whose actions are obscene whose hate outrages
our civilised selves who after all
represent the human ideal what we call
liberal democracy with justice freely done
and we are the only ones we stand alone
above the fray above the pack declaring
our virtues to all who hear bearing
the burden of knowing that all we do is right
and justice is the consequence of our might
so torture when we do it is not wrong
our enemies suffer little and not for long
but our men die at their barbarian hands
fighting to free their once-benighted lands
to have the liberty we have proclaimed
must be upheld and then must be maintained
while in guantánamo when desperate men
hang themselves finally we will again
say that they war against us with their deaths
that could not overcome us with their breaths
of anger or of hatred for we know
where such as they will ultimately go
and so we have created it on earth
and hell's abortion is our power's birth
while creeping onward comes another day
where all our deeds will receive their due pay
