'Female deficit'

I first read a scholarly piece on the subject of the female deficit in India in the late 1980s, the author seemed more concerned about the morals of women who became prostitutes to cater to the sexual wants of 'surplus men' than about the women from other parts of India kidnapped to become brides. Now, the issue surfaces again, not just in India.
