Irony of the week

Irony is the goddess of history; I'm more and more convinced of that. Consider that Ariel Sharon succumbing to a stroke is something to worry about as Sharon has become one of the most sensible Israelis on the issue of Palestinian statehood. That the Butcher of Kibya, and the man who masterminded the Lebanon War (and who stood aside and let the Sabra and Shatila massacres occur), should come to incarnate hope for peace in Israel/Palestine is not something I would have believed ten years ago; in fact, I wouldn't have believed it three years ago. And today, I find myself hoping that he recovers since Israel will be holding elections in March. It's another instance of that old Vulcan proverb, 'Only Nixon can go to China'.

Perhaps age does bring wisdom, or, at any rate, a better sense of what works and what doesn't.

I'm listening to reporting on Sharon's health, and the prospects for the future on BBC Five Live. Perhaps the best coverage on a story like this.
