Four seasons

 In summer, the cranes
stalk the road while eating.
We observe, and smile.

In fall, the snowbirds
arrive, then clog the roads.
We observe, and smile.

In winter, the sun
smiles upon both beach and street.
We observe, and smile.

In spring, all guests leave
promising they’ll soon return.
We observe, and smile.

Our yearly cycle
is always just the same.
We observe, and weep.

11 December 2008

simple truth

we reach for magic
and finding it we must fall
yet so much glory

22 June 2008

a fact of summer

clinking of hailstones
long stalks bow in the swift wind
drought is not broken

03 June 2008

a natural truth

fearing urgent green
we turn our backs on summer
diving into work

01 May 2008

behind the house

forgotten winter
a gentle may breeze stirs the green
blocking my vision

08 April 2008

spring appearing

under darkest green
the force of summer pushing
promises so much

12 March 2008

backyard

yesterday has passed
wind slowly moves the branches
into tomorrow

03 March 2008

looking slightly upwards

branch fractal budding
spring comes not so calmly
storm is on the wing

27 February 2008

under the magnolias

pale dusting of snow
on the green next to flowers
mixup of seasons

25 February 2008

failure to sleep

a winter wonder
the frogs croaking so loudly
behind our small house

27 January 2008

noon late january

silent these bright woods
in the hard wintry noon light
which lies about warmth

we look at blue sky
and think of bright birds that skim
over highest trees

in hottest august
winter will seem mystery
but now it is truth

24 January 2008

sophocles

the angriest god
fights justice against justice
with no victory

22 January 2008

perfection of form

perfection of form
branches bare of all their leaves
winter's deepest heart

so brief the white snow
thin the ice on our small pond
frogs' eggs in cold mud

deer eating our leaves
their hoofprints marking bare mud
life in the suburbs

05 January 2008

january morning

divine the meaning
of frost on the pond water
not mild the winter

23 December 2007

rainy midwinter

midwinter and rain
dripping steadily down pipe
cleansing our small world

inside the warmest
thoughts filling our tired minds
as we sip our tea

out of the darkness
swaying shapes of the bare trees
dance against the grey

14 December 2007

december morning

nothing ever rests
all is in constant motion
swift clouds in blue sky

cold weather coming
in the long nights your warm touch
spreading gentle calm

you asleep by me
soft snores steady reassure
that all remains safe

10 December 2007

warmth in autumn

night takes time to fade
fogs and steams fill the valleys
a lone dog may bark

07 December 2007

slave narrative

moment of capture
long walk to strange fort on coast
unknown the purpose

the middle passage
ignored by happy sea-beasts
not by hungry sharks

plantation practice
to survive the killing work
and speaking monsters

the slave resisting
reclaiming a lost honour
now is a hero

emancipation
not a gift but a promise
no easy freedom

04 December 2007

shadows in silence

shadows in silence
with crisp edges of sunlight
on dry autumn day

eyes on the ceiling
steady reflections of thought
others fear the snow

i have no message
for those who will not listen
yet still one for you

25 November 2007

waiting for the rain

waiting for the rain
far too long the autumn drought
bending under strain

you may smile or pout
the choice we have is plain
not to go far out

here is no true gain
we have gone so far past doubt
beyond reach of pain
