Student bloomers Spring 2007

However, the possibility of never getting hired can occur.

In fact, a constitutional disgrace best describes the American political system due to the unapparent disregard for the people.

This quote from the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, written in 1776, shows how the idea of equality was favored even before slavery was prohibited in 1865, more than ninety years later.

Life is liberty within its own origin, therefore one should be able to live without violence.

Liberty is the same as saying you as an individual is free.

So it is up to us as a hole to figure out a solution.

A good definition for life is “as Americans we have the rights to live without the fear of injury or being killed by an other human bean”.

There isn’t one man above the next regardless of race, gender, belief, or wealth.

In the fifteen chapters of complied work bearing his name Mozi are the reflections of interest of the later Mo-ist school, containing a number of sections on logic and military science.

In the text Mozi the first Chinese attempt to express a vision for an ideal or utopian world and detail as to how this world is brought into flourished.

The idea here is that society is designed to benefit society.

Another one of Mozi’s main tenants was the idea of moderation.

Nevertheless, the utility of righteous men in government could not be administered without a morally competent leader.

Without these qualities, chaos would continue to occur among a population of people with corrupt opinions and values of society.

Plato’s form of society creates individuals who lack their own conscious.

Any behavior that demeans humanity will have a negative affects on the nature of life within society that will intern harm the harmony of a society.

Plato’s belief that the state should be prior to the individual opens the door for humanity to deplete.

This is primarily because our social normialites have changed drastically.

This wastefulness could not be beneficial and thus pointless.

Not to confuse my writer, I do very much agree for what Wollstonecraft stood for, I just prefer Gouge’s approach.

His motivation for this theory was a second hand account of life in the West Indies after the abolishment of silvery.

After a duel Ivy League education at Columbia University and Harvard Law schools he is the first widely endorsed African American candidate for president.

Overall, Wollstoncraft believed that there should be education of women in a particular social class, so that they would have more to bring to society other than the concept of children and a house wife.

Wollstonecraft argues that women are quick to omit to tyranny when all they have to do is stand against their oppressors, instead they follow in the path that is created for them.

The part of the declaration that I strongly disagree with is the exclusion of women and abolished slaves.

Carlyle was a writer, who endured much leisure time, yet argued that leisure time is not needed to develop as an individual and that all men should work as a favor to God.

Although it took time, equality was finally reached and prejudice towards women deceased.

Libertarians, Greens’ and Reformist aren’t seen as being honest and true telling. Distrust lies within all political parties.

These number of voters decreased as the years increased.

The United States leads the nation in the amount of people that relocate.

There are a higher number of unemployed and low educations among African American and Hispanic cultures, whereas, in non-Hispanic white culture there is a higher number of employed and advanced education.

Mayor Shirley Franklin of Atlanta, Georgia has a lot of confidence in obstacles that she wants changed.

For example, if you visit Barack Obama’s official website and look in the photo gallery, you will see pictures of Obama with George Clooney, George Bush, and Superman. Even though these three individuals have different occupations and backgrounds, they are all bringing different voting groups to be on Obama’s side.

That leaves a gap of 1181 years without a woman being in a position of leadership in the African Methodist Episcopal church.

Wells was also challenged with the concept to develop female suffrage; she a strong believer in womanhood.

Accounts like these shows how hard its was to be black in the 70’s, but camouflages even worse it was to be a black woman.

In a range from the Palmer Raids to the Russia Revolution, Goldman’s experiences was a catalyst that compelled her to write a defining piece that she was well known for. However, Goldman exploited vitriolic events in her own volatile life that caused her views to be subjugated in writing.

She attributes one’s destiny with morality.

Women would do not abided but the rules that were set in place were ineligible for marriage.

In my opinion, women were only expected to seek out a husband throughout their lives.

In case Aryans were rolling nomads they can not give any religion of good virtues because they do not know the real bases of the well settled establishments.

Nietzsche’s argument on traditionalism is completely valid. In fact this theory, as stated would solve capitalism as a whole.

Human beings prior to the B.C. era knew it was unnatural to slaughter another human being, such as Cain when he slaughter Abel.

Also I know she meant for the early paring of male and female students to end with the men seeing their wives not as “wives” but as companions.

Until then the young man will turn to prostitutes and eventually become infected hence eventually infecting his wife, who then infects his children by boring them.

Hence a single ruler regime is not a viable source of leadership due to his/her ornate inability to make rational decisions.

The combination of liberty and freedom lies at the center of a superior republic.

Nature corrupts evil.

Burke believed the French Revolution was harming to society because it did not follow societal beliefs.

C.L.R. James (1901-1989) was born in Trinidad and Tobago, which at the time was a British colony, but is now known as the Caribbean.

The congress has a divided branch which is the House of Representatives and the senate.

Just like congress the president has many powers and structures.

After years of formal change in urban communities’ city halls, underlying forces of negative content still remain.

The author argues that deposit the numerous oppressions black women face she is still resilient.

The author argues that historically, groups are to identify best with one of theory own.

The policy of American government reeks with economic undertones and constituent whispers.

Fanon endured his own personal accounts of both racism and discrimination, on the bases of being a black man.

The remarkable thing about King is that he believed that the only way to reach the oppressor was to beat him at his own game, and allow him to see how much of a hypocrite he was, and that racism was not just base upon the color of ones skill.

Due to the fact that women of the time were specifically groomed to be that of a pleasing toy, by which perhaps accentuated the achievements of men, she believed that women should attend school.

However, as an African might be more apt to hire another African American for a job because of the sense of allegiance between the race, women have more of a natural competition amongst each other.

What Malcolm preached was in many ways right and made since but that didn’t stop many whites from being terrified and disturbed, yet also inspired, black Americans.

Malcolm X was labeled a “Black racist” because he disagreed with the “turn the other cheek” approach of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and most of the others that were considered the “acceptable” leaders of the civil rights struggle. (By which no one knows how.)

The issue with Beauviors argument collides when she begins to compare discrimination of gender and race of similar struggles and in the same category.

Women are written in books because of their achievements and not just because they have been achieved.

Freedom of religion is important, but it should not trump other rights like the right to sacrifice animals.

Freedom of religion should not preserve or protect unconstitutional issues seeing that activities can promote health consequences or animal brutality.

Bureaucracy means the rule by people at desks and has been used as early as the nineteenth century.

Politician is an individual who is a formally recognized & active member of a government. They tend to lie so they can get elected.

Everything is simply expected to simply be brought upon us.

The media shouldn’t tell our plans and secrets that we are doing in Iraq because the people in Iraq will know what we are going to do.

Most members of Congress are re-elected and are stagnant.

Most accused persons should not have rights because they did commit the crime with no question; if most accused persons did not have rights then I don’t believe the national debt would be as high as it is now.

Almost a hundred years ago, there was created a very familiar doctrine known mostly among the blacks and whites: separate but equal.

Power as well as principle remains at the heart of the U.S. and no country is more powerful or more influential in the US than the United States.

But I think there is a really big problem with this, weather you have the KKK or the NAACP doing a march or a lesser known organization you will still almost have opposition or violence against them.

To be considered as a politician one must be active in party politicians and galvanizes public opinion.

Many U.S. citizens view adolescent sex as unacceptable and should not be openly discussed.

Then there is Stokes the technocrat whom was heavenly influenced by Dr. King.

Gender equality is defined as the belief in the equality of the gender or the sexes.

Although, America bolsters one of the most powerful economies in the world.

The federal government used a German model to reorganize Public Health Service (PHS) into its present day role of public health activism that is headed by the Surgeon General to the present day.

Although the concept of liberty is said to be afforded to everyone it dissolves more and more as governments and political systems are structured to make society more civilized.

I do also believe that Hitler’s loathing of the Jewish race had lots to do with psychological disorders, I am not a psychologist, and am incapable of making any specific proposals.

Malcolm X publicly influenced many blacks during his time by expressing the issues of racism.

Confucius political theory is based on ethnics.

These unconscious are an effect of the need to sustain ourselves being our primary concern.

Mary Wollstonecraft born was truly a woman of stature.

Emerging out of the island of Jamaica in the later half of this century, the religious/political movement known as Rastafarianism has gained widespread exposure in the Western world.

The life and thought of Malcolm X has craved a curious path to Black cultural authority and social acceptance.

It is important to know that the bases of political science is more than enjoying the liberty that it poses.

When Bob Marley asks to “emancipate ourselves from mental slavery” he in prophesies at the same time to the people who are strongly influenced.

Bob Marley was a Jamaician musician, songwriter, and political activist, who of mixed parental heritage, saw fit to experience and understand the plight of blacks in Jamaican.

Rodney didn’t allow his disbandment from Jamaica stop him.

Bob Marley’s theory contributes some aspects to political thought and political theory that we can incorporate to further evaluate cultural identity and liberty.

He was an advocate for freedom and liberty and used his music as part of his weapon for spreading awareness.

It was founded on the suffrage of oppression on a mental, physical, and spiritual level.

Rodney challenged the thoughts of political leaders such as Forbes Burnham of Guyana or Michael Manley of Jamaica, seeing them as giving a new leash of life to neo-colonialism.

The cultural identity of modern African American political theorists Ida B. Wells-Barnett, C.L.R. James, W.E.B. DuBois, and Simone de Beauvoir Beauvoir biases their writings and their perspectives.

Williams stated in his Independence Day address that “Independence as a democracy means majority rule with minority rights, but the minority cannot prevent the majority from ruling… the success of independence depends on the actions of everyone” this alone validates the concept of cultural identity and the emergence of a liberal democratic government because of the fact that the Caribbean people now have a sense of belonging to within their own people instead of being under the control of British white men.

Rastafarianism first began as a religion that catered only to the oppression of blacks at the hands of white people.

To sum it up, John Stuart Mill, John Rawls, Olympe de Gouges, and Simeon de Beauvoir are four theorist who shed light on the question of justifying liberal democracy in a world in which other values other than liberty are significant.

When Rastafarianism comes to mind, Jamaicans, reggae music, dreaded hair and ganja might be one’s first thought.

One thinker’s thoughts are not better than the other. Different opinions make the world of philosophy great.

Many political theorist have foucused more on things other than liberty because they find that their theories are more significant and those fore have created a problem for modern political theory to be recognized. These theorist have let their values hince the progression of liberal democracy.

The philosophers aforementioned does this same thing.

It seems like they want to follow in the footsteps of America but they want to follow their own path.

The overabundance of people can lead to the feuding of different ethnic groups in Nigeria.

In conclusion, Nigeria is relatively better than many of the countries of Africa; however Nigeria as country still have very serious problems that they need to be addresses.

Malcolm realized that white America loved its white privilege and had not intention to let it go. He believed that blacks need to see their struggle as not just against oppression for civil rights but also as a fight against human rights.

Malcolm charged the black community to fuel itself towards black nationalism and take care of the problems they could address themselves within their own communities.

Goldman addressed the most president problems for women at her time.

We see King’s theories relevant when we view the progressive of grass root organizations fight for social injustices.

It was in her later articles that Beauvoir started to study men and women social constructs.

According to Beauvoir, males have created the female sex to mean otherness.

In his writings On the Subjection of Women, in 1809, Mill said that elations between men and women should be based on the principle of perfect equality.

Liberty is not Liberty unless it is exclusive to all.

Yet voting was a means for white politicians to sway the vote.

In addition, black problems in this country have been made in the interests of those whites dealing with these problems and not in the best interests of black people in the country.

Us as Americans are always changing and therefore, the system has to keep changing to fit our needs.

Yet, blemishes in the system show this process can be manipulated to achieve other goals, such as the weapons of mass destruction claim which granted the president the ability to capture Sodom.

Christianity and Islam should be able to coexist in America because that is why this country was founded.

I feel if you are a journalist it is your duty for all details and especially your opinions.

Basically with the few switching of having anything true to say don’t say it at all.

The political system should be used accurately which I think it is not because sometimes it faces to many issues regarding its use. I think it’s the people’s fault that is in charge of running the political system.

Feminists are always protesting that pornography flaunts the female body and depicts it poorly in public view.

a moment's meditation

the glow of afternoon is more than light
a pile of papers slowly becomes small
some have learned something but not all
by any means for some get nothing right
they miss the things that are in plainest sight
but each of them wants to avoid the fall
they hope to see their little words stand tall
the reader (me) is left with the normal plight
at any time i might want to go outside
and scream frustration at the quiet trees
never thinking that someone else might hear
still i'm caught i've got to end this ride
my anger will not be shouted to the breeze
i'll try my best to finish this long year

a common saga

a hero's fall seems greater than all others
turned from a warrior to a mere slave
laughed at when claiming that all are brothers
expected to work himself straight to the grave

in keeping silence there's dignity we're told
but we have not seen the causes of all pain
the blazing heat the depth of wintry cold
the burning sun the freezing of the rain

no one can tell just what the message said
it stays a secret even though he died
the words have faded just like all the dead
what makes a hero is just that he tried

when everyone declared it could not be
he made the very wheels of history turn
the river changed its course into the sea
the city that had fallen did not burn

when pillars fall we blame the moving earth
heat and great fire emerge from the hard ground
another kind of world has seen its birth
we're fortunate to hear a different sound

tired and beaten still he made things change
the crash of palaces was his last great gift
the noise and light his senses could derange
yet all that others built fell in the rift

we face the tyrant and we're all afraid
what we have learned is that all heroes fail
the ones who do the deed are not repaid
the cheque has long been stolen from the mail

yet still he struggled and perhaps he won
we do not see his torturers these days
and though he could not see the living sun
we know that he was shining it its rays

there is no monument to these events
those who remember have not much to say
but even as we count and recount cents
we're heartened by what happened on that day

freedom's the greatest thing when you're a thrall
but thralldom's not the easiest thing to leave
power and pride don't always have their fall
but that is what the downtrodden must believe

still when the hero comes and does his thing
we're awed for a brief moment before life
once more obliges us into the ring
and we are stuck in the same futile strife

a moment more and even the deaf and dumb
shall tell you of the good times that might come

seeking for answers

these are the pillars that hold up the sky
grey trunks that rise up to the blue
among the leaves the little birds may fly

grim are our thoughts as time goes by
we wonder at the brightness of the hue
these are the pillars that hold up the sky

on such a day the bravest one may cry
the cycle pauses and then must renew
among the leaves the little birds may fly

even the heroes reach an end and die
that is the one path no one may eschew
these are the pillars that hold up the sky

for the best answers in the glass we scry
or else we scream as power turns the screw
among the leaves the little birds may fly

each story that we hear turns to a lie
we know how ephemeral is the long view
these are the pillars that hold up the sky
among the leaves the little birds may fly

morning vows

each of us makes our way and does not wait
too long for motion we see the distant train
its light beams make a toy out of the rain
the work is looming and we can't be late
each of us seems a horse pawing at the gate
the weight of life a mountain on each brain
out obligations becoming a great chain
this is the outcome of our human state
no rat could hope to win in this long race
each of us clinging to our tiny hopes
feels strain and pressure on our very heels
each day we find ourselves keeping the pace
crossing the gap with no strong safety ropes
wondering why we're trapped within these wheels

a smaller world

mule grazes on the hillside ignoring me
the pasture's wide enough for both of us
i've got a job to do and won't make a fuss
from the top of the hill i can descry the sea
i think of all the places to which i'd flee
but know i cannot for it was ever thus
the journeys are too long to make by bus
unlike the mule i think that i am free
yet with these chores and duties i must stay
the wisdom of this world i've got to learn
until that time i do as i'm required
there has to be a better surer way
to do much more than merely look and yearn
but at that time i was with all hope fired

overabundance of finals

these many words that make so little sense
will tell you nothing but may well confuse
one wonders why young people seem so dense

at least most aren't just sitting on the fence
but their ideas are mostly old refuse
these many words that make so little sense

my mind is tired and my mood is intense
i've much to do and little time to lose
one wonders why young people seem so dense

to erudition they make small pretense
their papers are so dull they make me snooze
these many words that make so little sense

one might say something in their works' defence
if one has been long inured to abuse
one wonders why young people seem so dense

the task this afternoon seems so immense
wasted ink and paper must annoy the muse
these many words that make so little sense
one wonders why young people seem so dense

negation of the negation

at the quick moment one can't lie
all that we say must have some weight
the answer's hidden in the sky

each one that's born must one day die
only the unlucky may know the date
at the quick moment one can't lie

the bold as much as the very shy
know that they cannot avoid fate
the answer's hidden in the sky

one just cannot break down and cry
nor can one yet erase the slate
at the quick moment one can't lie

each will must shatter by and by
the loudest lion sleeps in the crate
the answer's hidden in the sky

you'll eat another slice of pie
there'll be no crumbs left on the plate
at the quick moment one can't lie
the answer's hidden in the sky

at the right angle

there is no silence through the day
the sounds of work are very loud
those workers seem to form a crowd
we cannot hear what they say
the excavator breaks the clay
about the trees there is no shroud
the walls arise both brown and proud
the pipes are laid out on the way
inside the voices are still clear
not from this place nor yet so far
all things are different yet the same
there's not yet stillness in the air
it's far too bright to see a star
life at this hour is not a game

marking more finals

there is so much here that is tired and trite
past the misspellings and the weird syntax
you come to thought that is weak and lax
vision that misses what is out in plain sight
clichés that have been polished almost bright
inanity stretching almost beyond the max
you want to prune the nonsense with an axe
but know that you will never have that right
to tell the truth though would be very bold
they turn on tears as if they had a tap
and thinking seems to them a waste of time
you wonder at just why you feel so old
at your great patience in the face of crap
and how they drive you to the thought of crime

yes

we need to affirm to insist to assert
who and what we are is not for sale
though we are many we aren't dirt
we don't all fit in the normal pail
to hang things up is not truly enough
we are not here to pose nor to adorn
life's not just about accumulating stuff
veils disappear not only when they're torn
still there's a time to make things clear
we are the ones who do not only take
we don't just float in the midday air
we're not just sitting down by the lake
our word declares just when and why
and that's far better than any old lie

never yet too late

where life is new or not so badly made
we want to shine and and indicate our grace
the thing to do is stay in the parade

all of the earth is underneath a shade
but still there's light in its appropriate place
where life is new or not so badly made

there's silence in the once so lively glade
of day's dominion there's no single trace
the thing to do is stay in the parade

at times we wish that we were not so staid
but cannot simply our long past erase
where life is new or not so badly made

another hopeful one will follow in our trade
eager to get in front and set the pace
the thing to do is stay in the parade

so let the glowing music stay or fade
glory appears in every normal face
where life is new or not so badly made
the thing to do is stay in the parade

never to return

ghosts inhabit the half-light outside
memories of distant dates and climes
the revenance of younger times
in the bushes obscure specters hide
recollections of some foaming tide
an indication that we hear the chimes
of history and life forgotten crimes
that we have suffered on the human ride
there's no appeal against the daily turn
stars will appear on cue and glow
though the clear night to emphasise
that there are older fires that still burn
not caring half a fig for high or low
and doing more than they now symbolise

thoughts that stray

a certain angle
a quality of sunlight
this is the true spring

light tells us so much
it uncovers deep secrets
without an effort

my mind spins quickly
so many words to conquer
so little time left

nothing too complex
the rich greens of the gully
small seem my worries

the purpose of education

there's no mistake that is supposed to count
all that should matter is the letter grade
i need to join the long and dull parade
my name called out as i the steps do mount
i have spent not two minutes as the fount
of learning but i expect to have it made
others may work but i'll lie in the shade
i should the common herd pass and surmount
learning's too hard i just want the degree
if you get in my way i'll just complain
you need to pass me out if you want peace
the library bores me i just want to be free
i don't need all this knowledge in my brain
i have the wisdom of a flock of geese

absence of shadows

on the blank wall no memory will stain
some depth of power indicating right
yet our connection with place is slight
a signal comes and our ears will strain
to catch each nuance none are plain
but bring with them an aura of fright
remaining from the deepest night
each of us recalls the weight of pain
never before would it be truly said
was there so much work left undone
and yet we feel completion will arrive
now we know there is naught to dread
all has become clear under the sun
and we rejoice that we are yet alive

let there be warning

where waiting has not reached the end
a moment comes when one must pause
while yet we see the coming trend

this road will make a sudden bend
that thicket will hide hungry jaws
where waiting has not reached the end

the thing one cannot do's befriend
these creatures with the largest maws
while yet we see the coming trend

those lights there in the east portend
a dawn that comes without a pause
where waiting has not reached the end

the ones who lie will still pretend
that is opaque what's merest gauze
while yet we see the coming trend

no message comes unless we send
a herald who knows all the laws
where waiting has not reached the end
while yet we see the coming trend

every blasted semester

their approach to meaning is a bit too lax
words have no weight and yet their minds sink
thought is an effort that appears to tax
all of their powers they have not tried to drink
the waters of the spring of knowledge yet
they want its taste without expense of work
their brains and not their bodies have to sweat
but from that task they all appear to shirk
day after day i've offered every help
but sat in silence seeing not one young face
and wondering just what would aid each whelp
but saying nothing without sense or grace
and now they come each claiming urgent haste
when there is for them not one moment to waste

rituals of passage

at any time we want to find our way
yet roads are barred we know not why
our honour insists we at least try
the bars to conquer and the beasts to slay
to make ourselves the heroes of the play
above the battle we cannot yet fly
to claim true knowledge would be a lie
yet we must claim mastery of the day
there's nothing new written upon the wall
but we must interpret and claim to find
an answer from a source beyond the world
as for the future we will let matters fall
where they list and bring instead to mind
the flag that hitherto we have kept furled

waiting for finals

i wait here for the rush that doesn't come
a trickle now and then the most bright
young women eager to get things right
or hoping that they have found the plum
rightest of answers instead of keeping mum
bring their fresh papers out into the light
i don't anticipate much sleep this night
what i will bear must reach the proper sum
there are the ones who will fall with a look
and those who could with patience say
what needs to be said and will maintain
their argument and go on to write a book
though i hope they will not on this day
i want to see the honest answers plain

too soon to sigh

if we must echo we won't hear
the day arrives without much heat
the weight is heavy on our feet
but still no more than we can bear
this is a turning of the year
the people rushing on the street
are moving to a single beat
of all that they might have to fear
no matter what we want to say
there's still another door to pass
before we resume our true shape
another blasted working day
another failure of true class
but still no real chance to escape

escaping from the past

when the machine responds too slow
our anger rises and our wrath is swift
and yet celerity is a great gift
a lot less natural than the steady flow
of ancient rivers our spirits are too low
when we arrive at the ultimate rift
and we require more than mere uplift
we want to feel the power and the glow
expanse of thought beyond the plain
and ordinary manner of such things
brings us to answers that we must desire
but now we hope for a fresh healing rain
to wash the dust off all the leaves and wings
but that will not extinguish the true fire

06 May 2007

the quiet answer

the hopeful quality of light
expanding through the visual frame
the things that enter in my sight
i give them each a proper name

not mine nor yours the proper right
to require that things stay the same
we're caught in an ignoble plight
but do not know if it's a game

a proper choice will not affright
the keepers of our truest flame
we life and hope for the delight
and shun the bringers of the shame

too soon will come another night
the raging heart we cannot tame
so we proclaim with all our might
the imperfections of acclaim

some things must dance

so to measure motions of light in air
observing the green in and under trees
the sudden impact of the warming breeze
an afternoon that's turned from cool to fair
i sit back thoughtful too comfy in my chair
to simply note the thing another sees
whatever happens that one time to please
ending all harshness in my thought and care
those meanings that we give at every turn
the light that's caught within a simple frame
waves passing by almost outside our sight
for these things like an exile i must yearn
to reach out and give each breath a name
before the coming of another night

echoes in time

almost in tune i watch the branches dance
the music fills my head in my mind's eye
the well-known stage is so simple to espy
reality is the wayward child of chance
richness of sound invites us to advance
in a quick blink i note a bird pass by
we have good reason to watch it fly
the truest rhythm creates the best trance
what we do or say makes the best bet
not random possibility but golden shape
of light in forest and of sound in space
the applause announces that a purpose set
by the old heart is not one we may escape
our love of art's not written on the face

the right perspective

at bottom there's but a single rock
foundation of a hope a simple home
we look above but see only the gloam
a star appearing now would be a shock
pause just a second for us to take stock
establish margins of both earth and foam
but don't allow a single one to roam
the answer is the limit or the block
never before or since the loudest storm
calm spreads around in the translucent hour
grey pillars hold up a thin roof of green
there's something here of sense or good form
but not enough to speak of force or power
what we accept is not what we have seen

on the edge of magic

a radiance that we won't soon see
as green of leaf hides grey of tree
mind still ensnared in shade of night
hears voice in distance proclaiming spite
name one of these and it will fade
we're told just how the game is played
in the right place we'll set the lamp
and look outside at humid damp
there's never any chance for rest
yet we must make a jape or jest
a sort of thing that once possessed
would give us hope for some reward
still should we the true day accord
to grant our vision what was known
the kind of chance that one alone
would take but once you're in the swing
there's not a hope that this one thing
would let you torment your own heart
much sooner you'd your own self cart
to some old place where calm remained
the sort of thing you'd call unstained
unwithered and still fresh and new
under bare feet you'd feel the dew
yet morning passes and soon comes
the moment when day turns to crumbs
the stars return with clouds of night
obscurity shall mask the blight
now what possessed you to take heed
of ancient fain and fallen creed
now in the time that still remains
we want the fruit of your young brains
name all the things that may surpass
the sight of dew fresh on the grass
and you will find you still can't stand
on what is at last your own land

it rained last night

the watching raven perches on the windowsill
that half-built house a sort of wooden cave
my mother's voice on the telephone is grave
she speaks of growing old and of the ill
health of a sister who has lost the will
to carry onwards what of life she can save
a wreck of memory she never could behave
in simple ways and now her mind falls still
my mother's words contain good sense and cheer
the message a quite simple one she's fine
and i should not be worried soon she'll move
much nearer to her sisters there'll be care
for years to come there's static on the line
but one thing's clear for now she's in the groove

05 May 2007

absence of empery

the message is contained in a true dream
when once it's heard it comes to us no more
the dragonfly floats above another stream

at once we see the meaning of the midday beam
some price is paid to get such modern lore
the message is contained in a true dream

through odd or even we'll still have to deem
a proper answer that will reach the core
the dragonfly floats above another stream

out of our memories the teachers form a meme
that we'll transmit not thinking of the score
the message is contained in a true dream

in their pursuit they'll not run out of steam
the quarry will be tracked right to the door
the dragonfly floats above another stream

at moments in the night we hear a scream
not eased by all the goods we have in store
the message is contained in a true dream
the dragonfly floats above another stream

What is Your World View?
created with QuizFarm.com

upon the hills no heather

no fraction of the truth is left to measure
we've just about exhausted all that's known
above our heads we see the birds have flown
to other places as is their wont and pleasure
duty finds ways to interrupt our leisure
the fields of wisdom are not yet well-sown
i turn to obligation with neither sigh nor moan
to find the truth's by far the greatest treasure
who would when working deny a beggar bread
but give the wealthy all they want in gold
is not a fool but something that's far worse
all senses reconcile to announce great dread
the message we receive is now quite old
and no one stays to answer when we curse

old nobodaddy aloft

there are no colours left in these dark days
no hope for light or love beneath the sky
we live and breathe the triumph of the lie
no answer ever comes to one who prays
one who remains does not declare he stays
from every heart we see the last hope fly
a name that marks us never seems to die
the winner is the one who justice slays
beyond us there's an answer we don't see
a set of symbols that we'll never hear
a multitude of seekers who can't find
a single object of desire instead they flee
this narrow world we still want to hold dear
since lacking vision we've all become blind

island under cloud

cocks do not crow at sunrise alone
you hear them calling at all hours
in times of sunshine or in showers
you hear so clearly that singular tone
piercing and surprising to the bone
disturbing those in their hidden bowers
but not arousing the far older powers
the bird reminds us we are not alone
so many greens under the watery sky
the sounds are strange the beasts repel
our approaches their purpose is well-known
above all this a boy would want to fly
to hear the stories that the trees could tell
and see the things that must be shown

normal obligations

name one of your desires and it will fade
that satisfaction soon becomes a trap
we seek for places that aren't on the map
our hearts are not constructed for the shade
we long for the excitements of the raid
not just the comfort of the belovèd lap
but something other than the daily nap
each of us longs for some braver trade
and yet we rise and turn off the loud clock
make our ablutions and get in the car
above us glowing red we might see mars
there's a long time till we can take our stock
the journey's long but does not take us far
if we look up though we can watch the stars

watching a house rise

what joy my sweet to see the work get done
out there in all weathers changing every rule
it must be finished quickly in the rain or sun

i watch as the little man fires his big nail gun
there's something of authority in that tool
what joy my sweet to see the work get done

the noise i have to say is loud enough to stun
my ears and their tongues are not in school
it must be finished quickly in the rain or sun

each time i look over i see they still do run
at least today it's not broiling but cool
what joy my sweet to see the work get done

the view must change that's nothing to shun
we'll see the owner coming out to drool
it must be finished quickly in the rain or sun

i spend my day at tasks that aren't much fun
my brain but not my body plays the mule
what joy my sweet to see the work get done
it must be finished quickly in the rain or sun

a night of grading

after midnight and i can pause at last
the weight of papers paralysed the brain
i'm tired and groggy but i can refrain
from reading now that's gone into the past
i wonder at the way these words were cast
almost at random but with some real strain
intended to prove wisdom but causing pain
i feel like odysseus lashed to the mast
no matter what i think i've got the task
of reading and assigning proper worth
no simple thing with time running so short
i let myself in private drop the mask
to laugh at every cliché's monstrous birth
and wonder how they'll do in a true court

naming the craft

no matter what the purpose magic takes
a myriad forms depending on the maker
we charge the worst each with being a faker
but don't do more for our children's sakes
the bread that each new father eager bakes
is given as a sign not that he's a baker
but that he makes a home the circuit-breaker
has been turned off and now the ground quakes
where there's a reason we make a fresh spell
to give the word its meaning and to form
a newer power not one that we could name
only a traitor now would need or want to sell
the things that come together as our norm
we make it out as part of the great game

moving from the dream

who gives a moment's thought to the first act
to mark the difference between was and is
the sort of thing that makes a simple quiz
turn into horrors we don't have to exact
the meat from matters to know that a fact
each man who does not claim what's his
worlds intersect and clash but we've got fizz
the solid globes into their cases racked
have not been given what they need to get
so we are marked by time and any chance
to find our answers has been given up
we're still not sure as to when we must forget
the sound of battle still we'll couch a lance
and hope this night to drink from victor's cup

the weak defeats the strong

not deep the tree roots
wind takes the giants and throws
them aside like chaff

not high the mountain
wind scours them clean and leaves not
one leaf or twig still

not deep the ocean
wind moves the waves but cannot
shift the great waters

taking account

we bend the rules and cry when they are bent
names come and go but the hard facts remain
this story is well known and still quite plain
the message we received was the one sent
time that was given was the time well-lent
to each and every traveller on the train
the pleasure was received so was the pain
what we all saved was more than what we spent
no signals came from the most distant post
we waited and we longed for the first bird
to mark the summer's start and give us cause
to listen hard for waves breaking on the far coast
for random sound to turn into uncreated word
and for flawed reason to produce true laws

not so well expressed

one way to answer gives us better hope
the night beyond is not where we must stray
each chooses how to live and how to cope

the mountain does not have an easy slope
we bake and swelter under the hot ray
one way to answer gives us better hope

we tell the truth and provide no soft soap
the fountain does not clean us with its spray
each chooses how to live and how to cope

those who can't see and are afraid to grope
want to move forward but still have to stay
one way to answer gives us better hope

not one who doesn't rely on the strong rope
there are better means to die but not to slay
each chooses how to live and how to cope

between the sky and sea we have our scope
there is no star when everything is grey
one way to answer gives us better hope
each chooses how to live and how to cope

mapping hell

there's no room for action and still less for thought
the place we settle down in is never truly home
we face the constant tension between is and ought

through heavy seas and through the bitter foam
we make our way and plan to tell our tales
no one but us should be allowed to roam

far out at sea we've seen the play of whales
the spouts are joyful and the waves not steep
what we expect may still be though it fails

names and addresses are the things we'll keep
not one of us can name the truths of hope
still we must make some hay before we sleep

the work we do will pull some up the slope
to name our terrors does not make them flee
we find ourselves with time that's not like rope

we can't play out the things that we might see
not one of us can say that we've been pure
the ocean comes and will not let things be

those who will come may not so long endure
they'll fill their pockets with the brightest stones
and then will vanish in a moment to be sure

the one who sharpens knives the one who hones
both blade and argument till they're so sharp
they'll cut the skin and cut right through the bones

we cover all the field with cloth and tarp
no ray of light will enter till we're done
meanwhile the lady plays upon her harp

the largest herds will down to the shore run
without the least doubt we'll be told what's true
and then we'll flee from the heat of a may sun

we've done our jobs there's nothing we could rue
but still we worry and we search the skies
for any helpful omen any change in the old view

about the corpse there always will be flies
but that's not our problem now we've got the light
truth comes to us well guarded by our lies

the day must fade and we must face the night
there's nothing we might do to end these jars
our hearts are high we will not now take fright

above our heads we see the summer stars

a long sigh

not to wait but work
that is the only way of it
duty summons us

outside the blue sky
tells us another story
joy in the sunlight

this is the turning
between spring and summer might
human the power

to undo the folded lie

in any honest measure we will tread the planks
our hopes and dreams invested in the tone
for these small mercies we give many thanks

we set our plans out and dress the ranks
each of us confronts the dark silent and alone
in any honest measure we will tread the planks

the pursuers are coming up right on our flanks
our hearts as slow today and heavier than stone
for these small mercies we give many thanks

our brand new masters have sent in the tanks
each soul is now defined as a free-fire zone
in any honest measure we will tread the planks

pain in the gut means we must move our shanks
the music must be played above each groan
for these small mercies we give many thanks

our lives have been held hostage by the banks
we give them everything down to the bone
in any honest measure we will tread the planks
for these small mercies we give many thanks

let symbols clash

not much is known of where the answers went
that shouldn't worry for the questions fail
this afternoon the meanings are all spent

from each of us the statement has been sent
the day is clear the faces rather pale
not much is known of where the answers went

the tree was straight but now the branch is bent
the cheque has cleared that was long in the mail
this afternoon the meanings are all spent

not one who builds but will at last relent
still we don't know what's measured in the scale
not much is known of where the answers went

the hottest air doesn't just go out the vent
to get it right means centring the long nail
this afternoon the meanings are all spent

still someone must have realised what was meant
the symbols aren't expressed in a long wail
not much is known of where the answers went
this afternoon the meanings are all spent

thinking of commencement

each name is called in turn and then they pass
the lies they told the little fun each had
the ones who worked at being good the bad
each takes their steps on imitation grass
and up the stairs this is their final class
the last formal test each of them hotly clad
in cap and gown we watch each lass and lad
be singled out then merge back in the mass
let us not be too hasty they're all bold
ready to face the world or so they think
we know that most will truly make the try
at conquering life and then they will grow old
some will keep hope while others turn to drink
but right now they all cheer and parents cry

ancient history

they make excuses for the way things ran
no one knew better in those dismal days
we have to take account of ancient ways
we only do the things we know we can
it's not as though there were some secret plan
to break those hearts there was no evil ban
on silence the characters in smart plays
were never literal that's the word that slays
woman and daughter the boy-child and man
truth is so simple once they were on top
and that was nature that was just the manner
that life had structured go talk to the wall
if you think you are some sort of pc cop
the rules came down from the great divine planner
all this is shouted and then comes the fall

a sort of cemetery

ruins are not absent they are a normal part
of this grave landscape under those great trees
lie so many secrets more than a dog has fleas
the swallows that so blithely swoop and dart
have an old mission this is where they start
on a long journey far from winds that freeze
meanwhile we note the ones upon their knees
appellants to the court of an absent heart
to speak of ruins is not to speak of age not old
these stones this coin fell from the purse
of a woman who's still fresh in her grave
for all this heat that history's far too cold
we can't ignore the message nor the curse
the trees are rooted on the bones of slaves

02 May 2007

power of the sun

where the frame of day falls at last to night
still it stays warm and few clouds mark the sky
insensibly we have arrived at summer might

there's still a soft and pleasant even light
the treetops don't seem quite as far or high
where the frame of day falls at last to night

we remake images into a single clear sight
nobody stops to ask wherefore or why
insensibly we have arrived at summer might

to name the power means we have got it right
the joyous birds cry out as home they fly
where the frame of day falls at last to night

the frames and shades reflect a different white
we do not note such things as time goes by
insensibly we have arrived at summer might

makers of grey magic sing us out of blight
another trade they soon will have to ply
where the frame of day falls at last to night
insensibly we have arrived at summer might

richer than emeralds

the qualities of light are what we see
in the lush green that forms a sort of wall
we listen to the avian song and call
and note the brilliant texture of the tree
the mystery which each mind must decree
is not explained by medium at the stall
the luminescence that on each must fall
is not a thing of rank nor of degree
except we ask ourselves the proper sense
of all our lives and what will nature's grace
provide for us against the coming night
the truth is she will make no false pretense
of showing other than her proper face
as much in darkness as now in the light

answer came there none

ignorance is the great affliction of the wise
who know what little they can truly know
good fortune can send only single spies

against the daily onslaught of sweet lies
the truth itself can scarcely live and grow
ignorance is the great affliction of the wise

those who know not the answer we despise
but not the ones who will not ever go
good fortune can send only single spies

who gets the prize is the one who most denies
that luck and chance will always move too slow
ignorance is the great affliction of the wise

we do not see the moon nor the sun rise
but long to be enfolded in their glow
good fortune can send only single spies

each of us looks out with old tired eyes
we see the hammer but won't feel the blow
ignorance is the great affliction of the wise
good fortune can send only single spies

watching a house rise

the speed that work happens has to amaze
we watch as walls rise but matters are not done
the men are sweating under the harsh sun
and yet each thing is done in proper phase
the house goes up as we astonished gaze
along the sides we watch the workers run
the heat that blazes does not seem to stun
nothing that happens can these heroes daze
the world changes before us and we smile
at all that's done and how it's done so well
and yet we wonder how the light and heat
don't bother them nor ever cramp their style
on such a day such labour must be hell
but they will not admit that they are beat

01 May 2007

the odd-shaped pearl

the music does not stop after so many years
each instrument performs like magic on its cue
what's old becomes in a twinkling new
applause falls warmly on each listener's ears
almost the tune brings us to shed our tears
we do not see what the composer had in view
but know what we may see before we're through
the next bright moment banishes our fears
our thoughts in words are not so well expressed
the moment comes and goes and we say not
one word we mean instead we gaze and gape
each of us at that moment fails the test
our minds do not stay cool when things are hot
the angel vanishes and there's just the ape

not a celebration

on order are the markers of good time
these are not ordinary ephemeral things
all peace and order celebrate in rhyme

we are now cleansed of dirt and grime
someone may see the fluttering of wings
on order are the markers of good time

nothing will now rise up from the slime
heroes today do not come armed with slings
all peace and order celebrate in rhyme

this is honest action for there is no crime
to answer and justice always flings
on order are the markers of good time

the bell of justice cannot ever chime
while our last hero chants and sings
all peace and order celebrate in rhyme

so in the end we are well past the prime
we've long ago let slip the leading strings
on order are the markers of good time
all peace and order celebrate in rhyme

may day

flags we will wave and joy will be expressed
with all our energy we mark this day
all that we know and all that we could say
are gifts of nature that explain our zest
each step we take each ordeal every test
of our commitment to the proper way
all indicate the strength of hope we may
harbour within our hearts although we rest
now here the breeze gives us another start
we listen to the words and make them true
each of our minds contains the best reply
these are not matters for the common mart
we think of forces now brought into view
the reason we are given the purpose why
we must assert our truth above the lie
there's a firm obligation to do our honest part
we wait for the command we'll act on cue
freedom begins in the depths of the heart
the better world we want is always new
above the flags and cheers our hopes will fly
now here the signal comes to every thought
the hope which we release will not be caught

the needful things

out of the air we see the future form
a vision that is concrete steel and wood
a simple manifestation of material good
this is the standard actual human norm
between past cold and future snugly warm
not what is now but what indeed should
be the answer the one best understood
none of us seek erasure by the storm
the shapes that scurry about every task
with purpose to create some other's place
have journeyed far and hope is their account
behind each grimace behind every mask
there's true expression in the normal face
each seeks solidity in the just amount

green are the woods

we welcome may with joy and cheer
the winter's past and summer comes
the season when we shed dull care

in this bright sun there is no fear
the flowers will soon turn into plums
we welcome may with joy and cheer

warmth and sunshine are to spare
we have no need to hunt for crumbs
the season when we shed dull care

outside the green glows and is fair
inside we sigh and twiddle thumbs
we welcome may with joy and cheer

the joyful spirit's on every stair
hope will illuminate the slums
the season when we shed dull care

we wake refreshed there's no nightmare
the bee outside with pleasure hums
we welcome may with joy and cheer
the season when we shed dull care

The storytellers' goal

The rule's quite simple, you must have a tale
that's worth the telling, and then you must write
with care and feeling, through the day and night
until you've got the whole thing in the mail.
From crises and odd situations never quail,
but keep the plot and ending in your sight;
it's yours to tell, so you must get it right.
The sting's not in the ending, but the tail.
You're not the one by whom it will be read,
still you must draw the reader with a line
that catches both the eye and sleeping mind.
The story takes its form in the reader's head,
the process must be both complex and fine,
and every tale should its true reader find.

30 April 2007

watching the towers

downtown is just a mile away
across the trees i see the tall
towers and think of how small
this building is in middle day
observed by those at work or play
whose vision doesn't fade or pall
the shadow will be long to fall
and spirit will be hard to slay
the moment will i know soon pass
aircraft above have far to go
and there is not yet hope of rain
i see the shimmer of the glass
a bird that passes moves so slow
and yet all things appear so plain

at the focus

i look out of the window at the haze
a light is blinking on a distant tower
this is not a shady woodland bower
or if it is then i am out of phase
each of these long and tiring days
i want to see the amaryllis flower
that event is far beyond my power
my mind is lost in a distorted maze
the voice of trees is quiet never loud
within these walls is nothing that i need
there's not a shimmer in the heavy air
not far from me i sense a noisy crowd
but for the moment thought will feed
on hazy light when clarity is rare

a simple pattern

a simple pattern that is not quite real
under the moulding's nothing that is true
what's readily apparent to the view
tells nothing that we don't already feel
is false and tawdry and not worth the deal
but still pretends to be both clean and new
we note the symbols but we have no clue
and no true standard left for our appeal
above us there's nothing but pale sky
the sun beats down and there is no regret
the monster lurks sharpening tooth and claw
there is no solace in what passes by
the purpose of our memory we forget
and none but a few can now recall the law

merely waiting

start of day clear light
the warmth announces springtime
green all around us

this watch is ending
who comes now brings no warning
the name is enough

still it is silent
i sit waiting for purpose
the wheel will soon stop

turning i watch light
outside dappled through fresh leaves
thoughts chase each other

a concrete hope

we see them build and not delay
someone needs shelter that is sure
reasons are clear and not obscure
shadows cannot long hide the way
all that is made must then decay
but that's not now this is the cure
to hope that our desires endure
our nightly dreams take shape in day
if what we wanted met our need
we would not mumble nor complain
our hopes would all be satisfied
not to the point of theft or greed
but there'd be no need to strain
and we would answer those who lied

there's not a cloud

for those not labelled we will take no blame
the lists are detailed comprehensive wrong
there's not a thing that we won't ever name

outside there's sign of a new diamond flame
not brilliant yet but still both hot and strong
for those not labelled we will take no blame

our thoughts are held within the normal frame
we note all matters which to our day belong
there's not a thing that we won't ever name

the trees outside look wild but they are tame
the shadows that they cast do not last long
for those not labelled we will take no blame

each of us knows our purpose pride or shame
are hidden by the the vast yet human throng
there's not a thing that we won't ever name

we set our money down we're in the game
our eyes stay bright upon our lips a song
for those not labelled we will take no blame
there's not a thing that we won't ever name

expanding light

shadows in the ceiling last remnants of dark
this morning promises a day of much heat
still we obey the rhythm and keep the beat
our choices don't seem simple but they're stark
ahead there lies a jungle it's certainly no park
all voyages here are hardship there's no treat
to keep us moving to stimulate our tired feet
there's so much more after the starter's mark
we'll have good reasons for the path and road
that we must take to reach the sacred goal
that marks the ending and will be the prize
that got us started we have no better goad
to keep us moving regardless still on the whole
we note more than what's seen by our eyes

29 April 2007

not to mean but to be

in general we're enchanted by what's new
and seek to better what we may not change
believing that we should extend the range
of what belongs to us beneath the blue
canopy of day there's always desire to imbue
with fresher magic or alter and exchange
the familiar for the fancied and the strange
we do not think the old can ever be true
at the beginning when the world was ours
we did not know which avenues to take
for all was open and all seemed just as fair
no matter how we faced yet now our powers
lessen and the guides we had forsake
us to find another purpose yet still we care

at the end of april

little above but blue and the hot eye
a passing plane direction north-west
it's time to pause to sit and take rest
one needs relief from relentless sky
the tiny moths that in their terror fly
must see one as some truly horrid pest
disturbing calm with noize and zest
not here content to let old nature lie
hardly a breeze how easy to forget
the winter's woes and rain and cold
spring's passed by in a single witty blink
our rules are clear one's path is set
on rails that will not rust until they're old
meanwhile the watcher has to take a drink

almost one touches

were we to take the pulse of rising sap
in the grey trees across the iron fence
in the small forest that is now spring-dense
we might escape from nature's trap
but find ourselves sprawled on her lap
unable at this time to make pretense
of being on any journey save one hence
to all those places far beyond the map
in this light the sharpness of the green
is simultaneous soothing and deep pain
we do not take the message for the thing
instead we take note of the morning scene
wonder when next we'll feel the gentle rain
and why the bird is suddenly on wing

28 April 2007

marking essays

no little doings
make the earth turn and sun rise
powerful forces

outside the deep night
trees holding silent darkness
the moon behind clouds

we wonder at this
seeking stars to guide our steps
dimly the lights glow

warm is this darkness
summer's promise a sure bet
evoking laughter

at an oblique angle

to welcome all the listeners and wish them every joy
there's nothing like the terminus to tell us of the war
amazing that we never seem to open the front door
on every side we see the meanings folk employ
to tell us what we're doing and to let the power annoy
the ones who cannot rise above the margin of the floor
name one and name another or we will lose the score
with access to the matters that we cannot now enjoy
so what the starter gives us when we do not see the way
will let us make our fortunes or else will let us thrive
in whatever little corner we choose to make our home
we've not been given orders nor the seating of the play
instead we must be grateful our friends are still alive
but stay condemned to move and wonder why we roam
evidence one would think that we are no more than foam
our hopes remain but now our bodies must not stay
none will be observing when our aircraft arrive
the soil in which we planted will turn out to be clay
there cannot be a moment in which we don't revive
the hopes that we have read of in every sacred tome
so when we reach the mountain we won't be grey or sad
but thank our lucky stars for all the happiness we had

making significance

there's not a sound but that we want it loud
silence weighs on us like an evil dream
all meaning is conveyed in the dark shroud

whose sense of justice makes them proud
do more than what the law itself might deem
there's not a sound but that we want it loud

magic and sorcery here are not allowed
but here's a cat that's lapped up all the cream
all meaning is conveyed in the dark shroud

above our heads we note the fleeing cloud
reality means more than it might seem
there's not a sound but that we want it loud

and yet no gifts but what was first endowed
to one who came and caught the early gleam
all meaning is conveyed in the dark shroud

never deny those things that once were vowed
more will be shown than in the basic theme
there's not a sound but that we want it loud
all meaning is conveyed in the dark shroud

another working day

we find the sun has weight and brings us pain
as well as life that day clear in its light
is not always the most pleasant sight
we look at the few clouds and long for rain
the summer now has come upon us plain
no room for winter and its frozen blight
but when you work you find relief is slight
there is no choice here but to sweat and strain
so when the signal comes that marks the hour
there's nothing left but to down tools and weep
for shadows that deny both hope and choice
in the woods small animals hide and cower
they long for rest but fear the end of sleep
meanwhile we hear a single gentle voice

ceremony of innocence

how do we answer when we are not called
but sense a need that we might just fulfill
not just a matter of good heart or will
yet this is all that others here have hauled
these gardens are wide open none are walled
the sky above us seems serene and still
their golden names have not the power to kill
mothers and wives have keened and bawled
in vain for there's no answer to the theme
that life proposes unless we take the chance
to make our own way through the gloomy wild
the whole thing will appear as just a dream
no one retreats and yet there's no advance
the adult seeks for guidance from the child
