the town was taken but we did not weep
our armies smashed and we shed not a tear
we thought it all a dullish sort of year
the seas around us cannot be called deep
and on them it is quite easy to fare
the town was taken but we did not weep
we need to rest and sing ourselves to sleep
though we would only go where cowards dare
we do not count it any sort of care
the town was taken but we did not weep
